Family-owned Winterdale Cheese picked up the title after installing solar photovoltaic (PV) and ground source heat pump technologies at its barn in Wrotham, near Sevenoaks.

The independent producer, whose workforce includes 80 Friesian Holstein cows, already boasted strong green credentials but can now proudly state that its award-winning Winterdale Shaw and Oak Smoked cheese are made at no cost to the environment.

Robin Betts, owner of Winterdale Cheesemakers, said becoming carbon neutral was very important to him.

“When we began producing cheese in 2006 we incorporated a low energy input strategy in a bid to reduce our energy usage as much as possible,” he said. “This included only using morning milk, thereby retaining heat as well as freshness, and allowing our cheese to mature in our natural cave cellars, which hold a steady 10 degree heat level year-round – rather than use machinery to maintain a constant room temperature, which is one of the most energy-consuming processes for most producers.

“Now we have installed solar PV and ground source heat pump systems on site we have tipped over the edge from low energy to carbon neutral, something we’re delighted to have achieved. We believe we’re now the UK’s sole carbon neutral provider of hard cheese.”

The renewable energy technologies were supplied and fitted by Dartford-based Enevis, which boasts more than 20 years’ experience in the industry.

The solar PV system, which converts daylight into electricity, will provide annual energy savings of £883 and tax-free Feed-In Tariff returns of £3,476 – over 25 years this will provide an income and saving of £147,872.

The 9.68kWp farm also boasts strong green credentials, with CO2 savings of 8.15 tonnes per year.

The ground source heat pump, which uses underground pipes laid in trenches to extract heat from the ground, provides savings of more than £1,500 per year.

Mr Betts added: “The cost savings of these technologies are great. In the long-term they will help us make big cuts in our energy bills.

“While becoming carbon neutral was our main goal, the financial benefits to us of having Enevis install the two systems are going to be excellent.”

Gary Mayatt, Managing Director of Enevis, which specialises in the installation of renewable systems for homes and businesses, said: “We are pleased to have played a part in helping Winterdale Cheesemakers realise their carbon neutral dream.

“Renewable energy systems can be tailored to the needs and resources of each individual business, providing the firm with a noticeable savings on its energy bills and also lowering its carbon footprint.”

Transport Minister Mike Penning has announced that work can start on preparations for the long awaited A 21 dualling scheme between Tonbridge and Pembury. Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council has long been a strong supporter of the project that will bring economic, traffic and safety benefits to local people in and around Tonbridge and have benefits for the wider areas of West Kent and Sussex.

In warmly welcoming the announcement, Cllr Nicolas Heslop, Cabinet Member for Planning & Transportation at the Borough Council said: “This is the most superb news for all those campaigning to have it confirmed by Government that these much needed improvements now have the prospect of actually happening.

“The Borough Council has been robustly advocating the case for the A21 Tonbridge to Pembury dualling scheme, working closely with local MPs, local businesses and community groups, and as a member of the A21 Reference Group of MPs and local authority leaders. I pay particular tribute to the work of our three MPs, Greg Clark, Sir John Stanley and Michael Fallon. The Borough Council has wholehearted supported the work that Kent County Council has been doing this year in seeking reduced costs for the project in conjunction with the Highways Agency.

“The Borough Council’s own advocacy for improving the A21 was led by the late Mark Worrall, as leader of the Council, and chairman of both our Local Strategic Partnership and the West Kent Partnership, also ensuring that Ministers were left in doubt about the strength of public support for the dualling.”

The team at Rippledown, one of the UK’s leading environmental education centres, are launching an innovative new eco holiday package for this summer. So, if you are looking for an activity based holiday with a difference, then it’s time to head off to the beautiful countryside and coastline of White Cliffs Country in East Kent.

From 4th to 19th August this year, families will be able to make use of Rippledown’s high quality hostel accommodation and its stunning surrounding 3 acres of grounds, tailored for more than fifty different environmentally based fun activities, and enjoy a holiday where the children wont have a chance to say “I’m bored” whilst they connect with nature in a myriad of different ways and enjoy activities that will also gently guide them towards a more healthy and more sustainable future on the planet.

During the family eco-holiday fortnight, activities on offer can be for children and adults separately or as a whole family during your stay; meanwhile one and two-day courses, such as an Introduction to Sustainable Building, will be running throughout the fortnight. For those wishing to fully embrace permaculture, a system for designing sustainable lifestyles, an in-depth course culminating in a certified qualification will be on offer. So, while the children are getting back to nature and enjoying bush crafts and engaging with the natural world, mum or dad can gain the Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC).

The word ‘permaculture’ comes from ‘permanent agriculture’ and ‘permanent culture’. Those who embrace it live not just sustainably, but more healthily and have plenty of fun along the way. It provides the tools and confidence to design and create healthy productive places to live, work, rest and play.

The course is run by Permaculture expert and author on the subject, Steve Charter and Permaculture Diploma holders Jo Barker and Nir Halfon. It covers food, renewable resources, wildlife and beauty, sustainable communities, ecobuilding, sustainable energy, sewage, compost, appropriate economics, group work, design and implementation of projects.

Holidaying at Rippledown offers even more, with spectacular visitor attractions in one of Kent’s designated areas of outstanding natural beauty.

Why not explore the unique SSSI habitat of The White Cliffs Countryside excellent for fishing trips, bird watching, nature rambles and walking the historic Saxon Shore Way along the East Kent coastline.

Five miles to the south is Dover with its fascinating Castle and other heritage attractions from over 3000 years of history whilst a couple of miles to the north is the picturesque town of Deal where you can also find two further English Heritage attractions of Walmer and Deal Castles and whilst staying in the UK for your holiday you can still take in the continent – a day trip (taking the Dover-Calais Ferry) beckons.

There are stunning local beaches and rock pools at St Margaret’s Bay and Kingsdown – perfect destinations for Sea Canoeing, Windsurfing, Swimming and Bathing and for tranquility and relaxation visit the six acres of beautifully managed organic parkland at The Pines Garden and enjoy home cooked food at the Pines Tea Room.

Kent Science Park (KSP) bosses told the Conservative MP for Bromley and Chislehurst how the Park’s 61 business now collectively employ more than 1,300 people – up from just 870 five years ago.

Speaking after the Swale tour on Tuesday, May 1, which also saw Mr Neill stop off in Sittingbounre High Street, he said: “Kent Science Park is clearly a centre of scientific excellence and a key centre of employment for the area. KSP’s year-on-year increase in employees bode well for the entire North Kent corridor.”

Mr Neill was given a taste of the range of world-leading research currently being undertaken by KSP’s cluster of companies engaged in fields as diverse as life sciences, high-tech engineering, environmental, ICT and medical technology.

He was shown inside Vivacta’s laboratory, where the company’s scientists are developing a revolutionary technology platform for rapid, quantitative, high-performance point-of-care diagnostic tests. The life-saving equipment can be used to deliver extremely sensitive and accurate results equivalent to laboratory testing close to the patient within 10 minutes.

The Minister also toured the Kent Science Resource Centre, a dedicated, state-of-the-art teaching facility providing Foundation Degree courses in laboratory skills and further education for the life science industry.

Mr Neill said: “Vivacta’s revolutionary work could have huge implications for the NHS, helping to save thousands of lives each year. It is vital that we encourage companies like Vivacta to continue to thrive and also support the next generation of scientists.”

James Speck, Site Director at Kent Science Park, said: “I was honoured to be able to give the Minister a glimpse of the groundbreaking work being undertaken at Kent Science Park everyday. It is incredibly rewarding to hear how impressed Mr Neill is with our efforts to support local businesses and encourage job growth in the area.

“We endeavour to continue this work through redeveloping and expanding the Park. Central to this goal is the proposed link road connecting the M2 to the A2, which the Minister was very interested in.”

Andrew Bowles, Leader of Swale Borough Council, said: “We were pleased to welcome the Thames Gateway Minister to Swale as it presented us with the opportunity to showcase our success stories, such as Kent Science Park, as well as our ongoing redevelopment and regeneration projects.”

On the 3rd of July 2012, Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce will be running its annual “Kent & Medway B2B” business show which will be held this year at the Ashford International Hotel in Ashford, Kent.

This show brings together the county’s business community for a day of networking, learning and face-to face business. Everything you need to know under one roof, in one day.

Guest speakers this year will include Richard Farleigh (BBC’s Dragons Den), Jo Fairley (Founder of Green and Black’s) and more… Combine this with a selection of workshops that offer free advice on how to reduce costs, manage your social marketing and improve your bottom line; this year’s event is a day not to be missed.

This year sees the first “Start-up” zone at the show, which is sponsored by Auratek Ltd, an IT support company based in Broadstairs Kent. They believe in doing things a little different to everyone else, “we feel that IT should adapt to your environment, not the other way round” says Director Daniel Eales. This is probably why they adopted a Chameleon as their company mascot!

To celebrate being the sponsor for the start-up zone, Auratek are offering an amazing 6 stands FREE to any company that has started trading since January 2010 and all you have to do is go to www.auratek.co.uk/b2b and answer the following question:

On Friday 27 April 2012, Mayor of Tonbridge and Malling, Cllr Brian Luker, presented certificates to the winners, who were all nominated through the Borough Council’s Environmental Champions scheme.

The scheme, which was launched in 2009 to encourage more people to make an extra effort to improve the environment, is open to all Tonbridge and Malling residents and anyone can nominate a person or a group to become an Environmental Champion.

The winners were rewarded for a range of environmental efforts including litter picking, planting flowering bulbs, cleaning up the River Medway, installing owl and song bird boxes as well as taking part in community days and organising events to raise awareness of environmental issues.

Mayor, Cllr Brian Luker, says: “All of our Environmental Champions really impressed me – what a huge effort they have made to improve and protect our environment. I hope their actions will inspire others to do what they can, not just to keep our borough clean and tidy, but to help preserve our communities for future generations. In this, the fifth year of the scheme, it was good that so many groups were nominated, showing just how many more people are committed to working in their own community to improve their environment.”

To nominate an individual or a group to become an Environmental Champion please call the Council’s Environmental Projects Coordinator on 01732 876295 or email waste.services@tmbc.gov.uk.

The winners are:

Brian Lloyd (East Peckham)

Brian regularly clears litter in East Peckham specifically Hale Street and the playing fields. His work was initially on a voluntary basis but has since been employed in a small part-time capacity by the Parish Council. He operates as an extra pair of eyes and ears reporting environmental and street scene related issues to the Parish Council. He has an active interest in protecting and improving the environment of East Peckham.

Jenny MacDonald (East Peckham)

Jenny regularly voluntarily litter picks around Bullen Lane and the Chidley Cross areas of the village. Jenny regularly walks the public rights of ways and reports anything out of place to the Parish Council. Her efforts have made a positive impact on the environmental quality of East Peckham. Jenny operates as a valuable pair of eyes and ears for the village. Jenny has an active interest in protecting and improving the environment in East Peckham.

Chris Walter (Tonbridge)

Chris volunteers with the Medway Valley Countryside Partnership’s (MVCP) Thursday Action Group (TAG) and also works at Haysden Country Park as a volunteer. He regularly carries out additional environmental volunteering for MVCP, helping at some of our educational events in Haysden Country Park and also doing important reptile and amphibian surveying for us. Despite ongoing family commitments, he is very proactive and more than worthy of being individually nominated. Chris has also volunteered as a Borough Council Street Monitor for his area of Tonbridge for over four years.

Sue Pickering (Tonbridge)

Sue volunteers with the Medway Valley Countryside Partnership’s (MVCP) as a very proactive River Warden and member of the Thursday Action Group (TAG). She is one of the best, constantly sending in her reports and keeping in contact. She works hard around the Haysden area and also works as a Haysden Country Park volunteer. She regularly carries out additional environmental volunteering for MVCP such as local walk checks, helping out at MVCP educational events in Haysden Country Park and also doing important reptile and amphibian surveying for us. She is more than worthy of being individually nominated.

Shirley Barker (Tonbridge)

Shirley Barker is a River Warden for the Medway Valley Countryside Partnership (MVCP). She also regularly litter picks around Haysden Country Park. Shirley is very active in regard to volunteering her time to improve her local environment. She is very worthy of an award. She has also recently volunteered to learn how to check Public Rights of Way and designated walks on behalf of MVCP.

Pete Gardner (c/o Veolia Environmental Services, Tonbridge depot)

Pete Gardner is the street cleaner for West Malling, he does a very thorough job, there is never any litter when he is around even cigarette butts out of plant tubs go in his sack. He is conscientious, helpful, bright and cheerful always wishing a good morning to everybody. After the Christmas Lights switch on, the High Street was in a terrible mess, although it is his job, he cleaned it all the litter and rubbish without complaint.

He calls on two residents in the High Street to make sure they are up and well too – which is certainly above the requirements of his job role. He is a little gem. He deserves this recognition and an award.

Paul Osbourne (Snodland)

Paul has taken on the role of cleaning his local area by sweeping gullies, litter picking and cleaning out drains.

Joe and Lucy O’Donnell (Tonbridge)

Rabin Pun (Tonbridge)

This young boy volunteered and worked so hard and carefully throughout the South Tonbridge Love Where You Live litter pick in January.

Sophie Seal (Kings Hill)

Sophie is only 11 years old and has assisted with four Bash the Trash events around Kings Hill. She is always very cheerful and willing to keep her local area looking at its best for other people to enjoy. Her community spirit goes way beyond her years.

Kent Army Cadet Force (Tonbridge Detachment)

These litter pickers showed exceptional dedication and hard work picking up litter as part of the Love Where You Live South Tonbridge clean up in January.

Sgt Apps, Cpl Alex Nye, Cdt Olivia Irwin, Cdt Louise Francis, Cdt George Spence, Cdt Megan Kibble, Cdt Jamie Brennan

HadLOW CARBON Community (Hadlow)

HadLOW CARBON Community was launched in 2008 as group of local people working together to raise awareness of climate change and the necessity for sustainable use of finite resources, working towards community-based solutions. Activity includes growing fruit and vegetables on the community allotment on land made available to them from Hadlow College. The group have compiled a local food directory for Hadlow, created the ‘snow people’ environmental art work in the village centre last year, and installed four bicycle stand planters in the village. They have secured funding from KCC, B&Q and the Grassroots Community Fund. More recently the group have planted 5000 bulbs on the green outside of Hadlow College, next to the A26 as part of their Love Where You Live commitment.

Julie Taylor received the award on behalf of the group.

Tonbridge Canoe Club (Tonbridge)

For many years the Tonbridge Canoe Club has diligently joined in with the annual River Rubbish Round-Up which is run by the Medway Valley Countryside Partnership. Most people who partake in this challenge litter pick the river banks. The canoe club is different – over thirty members of the club take to their canoes to clear litter from the River Medway (Tonbridge stretch). The River Medway is enjoyed by many users – including The Tonbridge Canoe Club. The club ensure that they can continue to enjoy their activities on their river by keeping navigation clear of litter and debris and as you may have seen the odd shopping trolley! Recently the canoe club have been continuing this arduous task as part of their Love Where You Live commitment.

Jeremy Clark (Chair of Tonbridge Canoe Club)

Haysden Country Park Volunteers (Tonbridge)

Year round, in all weathers, a merry band of volunteers meet at least once a month to carry out a range of tasks in Haysden Country Park. They plant trees, repair paths, construct and erect fences, build bird boxes and bird hides and carry out improvement works on the lakes. There really is no end to their talents. Many of the volunteers give up extra time between task days to help the ranger, Rachel Cantwell with bigger work around the park. The volunteers talk to park users to explain to them what they do as well as deal with the issue raised by the other park users, for example cutting back over hanging branches. Every year park users benefit from over 1500 volunteer hours at Haysden Country Park. This makes the park more welcoming, accessible and enjoyable for all users.

Receiving: Sue Hennessy; Kevin Lavender; Don Croker; Dave Withington; Anthony Bales, Chris Walters; Sue Pickering and Deborah Slater

Larkfield Litter Pickers (Larkfield)

Larkfield has always been a place which has demonstrated great care from the point of view of residents living there. We have 19 street monitors who live in Larkfield who regularly report issues and a very active neighbourhood watch area. As part of the ‘Love Where You Live’ Campaign the Larkfield Litter Pickers sprung into action in September 2011 with over 80 volunteers from local schools, churches, neighbourhood watch, football clubs and uniform groups to really Bash the Trash in the Larkfield area. They have since carried out two more large scale clean-ups. These three ladies are a force to be reckoned with in terms of passion and can-do attitude. They have made a huge impact in the Larkfield area through engaging residents and demonstrating the many ways we can show we love where we live.

Receiving: Sarah Cole, Sarah M’Grady and Claire Dobson

Macey’s Meadow (West Malling)

From what was a very neglected and rubbish filled 20-acre cherry orchard as oasis has been created entirely by local volunteers in the centre of West Malling. There now exists an apple orchard (old varieties budded on specially for the parish council), a cherry orchard, a nut plat, a mixed indigenous woodland of oak, ash, wild pear, holly and silver birch, a Jubilee wood and a ‘green space’ for general use. Many of the trees in the woodland were sponsored by local people in memory of a loved one. There are also two pastures where sheep graze. The delighted children love to see the new born lambs when they arrive each year. The whole area is accessible at all times via the kissing gates. Over 300 metres of new hedge has been planted. Dedicated volunteers have learned many new skills, including hedge laying. Among the volunteers we are lucky enough to have an expert in looking after our tractor, a shepherd, a foreman from East Malling Research Station who oversees the operation, and a technical person who has helped set up the website. Two members have installed an owl and a song bird box. Other volunteers are willing to do all and more of what is asked of them for this special area of land. The parish council are also delighted to have two young men, who as part of their Duke Of Edinburgh Award are working as Macey’s volunteers.

Receiving: Margaret Robinson (Chair) and Malcolm Wickenden

Russet Homes Junior Wardens Scheme (Mereworth)

These six young people have been nominated as a group for their commitment to participating and completing the Junior Warden Scheme run by Russet Homes (part of Circle Anglia Group). Junior Wardens learned about the effects of Anti Social Behaviour on people and neighbourhoods, were made aware of the dangers of fly tipping, and abandoned vehicles and how to report issues to the relevant people. They also attended sessions run by Kent Police and Kent Fire and Rescue learning about personal safety and the resources that are used up by mindless bogus calls. Most of all they have taken on the responsibility of looking after the refurbished play area on their estate and took part in a litter pick of the Air Field estate.

Friends of Nevill Park (Snodland)

This group has been nominated for their wide ranging interest in the care and cleanliness of Nevill Park and for a recent Spring Clean of the park undertaken by a team of around thirteen local residents. The park was litter picked by the volunteers in February. The park is owned and managed by Snodland Town Council who welcome this support to keep the park at its best. The group have recently secured funding to carry out the repaint the play equipment in Nevill Park. A team of fifteen residents spent around 100 man-hours painting over the Easter weekend. The Friends group are pleased to welcome back a dog show for the second year running, to their park this August, to enjoy a day with all the family and their dogs. Members of the group are also linked to the Snodland Goes Cleaner project.

Members: Mrs D Crook, daughter Melanie and grand-daughter Libby; Mr & Mrs G Cartlidge and family; Mrs R Hewitt and family; Mr A Pink; Mrs W Brice; and Mr Ben Kember (who won an Environmental Champions Award in his own right last year)

Receiving: Mrs Dilys Crook, daughter Melanie and grand-daughter, Libby, Gary Cartlidge (and up to 3 children)

Do you want to know more about disability services in the local area? Do you want to find out about what is available in the Gateway and your local community?

A Disability Awareness Event is being held at Dover Discovery Centre, in partnership with Dover Gateway, on Thursday 10 May between 10am and 2pm, to encourage people to meet local service providers and see what the Gateway can offer to you.

Organisations who will be on hand include the Health Trainers, Carers’ Support, MCCH, the Disability Drop In Centre, the Volunteer Bureau, and Speak Up CIC. You can learn more about the services they provide, and can also give your thoughts on what services you would like to see in the Gateway by filling in a questionnaire.

Kent County Council and Dover District Council joined up to open the Gateway office in Dover, which provides increased services for residents, including a range of voluntary and community support services. Dover Gateway is situated in Castle Street, and has successfully engaged with local businesses, charities and voluntary organisations to ensure that services are relevant to residents’ needs, and it is constantly evolving.

Matthew Munson, Front of House Coordinator for Dover Gateway, said: “The ethos of the Gateway is to be open and accessible for everyone, and we want people with disabilities, or those who support disabled people, to feel they can access services in exactly the same way. We’re also looking for feedback from people to make sure we can deliver the best possible service to people with disabilities.”

Dover Discovery Centre houses the Library, Dover Museum, a theatre and Adult Education together under one roof and so can offer a variety of services to the local community – and it is always adapting to remain fresh and relevant to the community.

For more information about Dover Gateway, please see the DDC website at www.dover.gov.uk or for more information about the Gateway service, please see the KCC website at www.kent.gov.uk

Held annually on the closest Saturday to St George’s Day, the free family event celebrates all things quintessentially English, with themed zones including the seaside, a village green, a farm animal enclosure and a medieval arena.

MP for Gillingham and Rainham Rehman Chishti officially opened this year’s festival from the village bandstand, and The Mayor of Medway, Cllr Ted Baker was also in attendance to introduce “The Queen”, who then delivered her speech – a respectful spoof to mark Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee year.

Alongside deckchairs and donkey rides there was a specially created sandy beach, a miniature London bus took little ones on tours of the park, and a fiery but friendly dragon thrilled the crowds in honour of St George’s Day.

Colourful costumed characters from English history roamed the park to mingle with visitors, including Sir Winston Churchill, Emily Pankhurst and Victorian bathers, while local traders provided traditional fish and chips, pasties, ice creams and plenty of tea.

Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community Services Cllr Howard Doe said: “It was wonderful to see so many people visiting the festival again this year – despite the forecast for rain the weather was perfect and it was obvious that everyone was enjoying this fun and quirky day enormously. I’d like to thank all involved for making it such a superb free event”.

The public/private partnership was launched in 2002 to promote the county as a tourism destination.

“In the last 10 years, the face of tourism in Kent has changed beyond all recognition,” said Sandra Matthews-Marsh, Chief Executive of Visit Kent.

“Our historic buildings, such as Leeds and Dover Castles and the Cathedrals at Canterbury and Rochester, are enduring, but today you can look around the county and add to them modern, world class tourist attractions such as the Turner Contemporary at Margate and the No1 Smithery at the Historic Dockyard, Chatham.

“Their development has been mirrored by a growth in boutique hotels and local restaurants using local produce.

“The last 10 years has also seen a massive improvement in transport links to the county, including High Speed 1, making it easier for people to reach us, leading to an increase in visitors. This saw tourism’s economic impact on the local economy rise by 33 per cent between 2003 and 2009.”

Visit Kent has built a reputation for innovation in the past decade with events such as the hugely popular My Kent Big Weekend now being studied by other visitor destinations around the country.

“Visit Kent has been an enormous success in the 10 years it has been in existence,” said Alex King, Deputy Leader of Kent County Council. “The drive and vision shown by all of the team have seen tourism make an increasingly important contribution to the county’s economy.

“It is a sign of their value that other regional tourism bodies are turning to ideas originating from Visit Kent to boost the sector in their own areas.

“Visit Kent inspired events such as My Kent Big Weekend and campaigns such as the Kent Contemporary series of advertisements have helped raise the profile of Kent’s attractions, both man-made and natural, and position the county as one of the leading destinations in the UK.

“Kent can be proud of its tourism industry, which only looks set to grow and prosper thanks to the continued efforts of Visit Kent.”

Sandra Matthews-Marsh concluded: “We are proud of the work we have done and the progress we have made in the last 10 years, and are delighted that our anniversary falls in such an exciting year, with the Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics offering a wealth of opportunities for tourism businesses in the county to benefit.

“We intend to mark this important year in our history with a number of events to thank those who have supported us since our launch, and who we know will continue to support us in the future.”
