Locate in Kent Generates Energy Links

Locate in Kent is spearheading efforts to encourage more businesses to put themselves forward as part of a local supply chain for the Kent and Medway’s offshore wind industry.

The investment promotion agency wants to give local suppliers and tradesmen every opportunity to promote their products and services to the developers, manufacturers and operators of offshore windfarms such as London Array, Vattenfall, Vestas and others.

The re-launched Kent Wind Energy website – www.kentwindenergy.com – provides an online link between these suppliers and developers.

Earlier this month, Locate in Kent bosses introduced UK Trade & Investment in Denmark, market advisors Charles Osborne and Tommy Hansen, to a number of local businesses that have either already benefitted from securing business from the offshore activity already taking place or who wish to engage with the industry in the future.

The UKTI representatives were keen to connect these firms, including Peel Ports, M J Allen Group of Companies, H & Askham and Douglas Westwood, with potential business partners in Denmark and to arrange one-to-one meetings at the European Wind Energy Association exhibition and conference being held in Copenhagen in April. Locate in Kent will be exhibiting at this event for the first time, promoting Kent and Medway to the industry.

Paul Wookey, Chief Executive at Locate in Kent, said: “Bringing together the firms behind Kent’s on-going wind farm projects, such as London Array, and suppliers across the county is a win-win situation; reducing the developers’ overheads, creating jobs and boosting growth in Kent.

“The recently re-launched online Kent Wind Energy directory and the visit by UKTI representatives are just two of the many ways we hope to nurture these vital links.”

Tommy Hansen and Charles Osborne also met with Peel Ports’ representatives at Sheerness Port and heard about the proposed onsite investment by Vestas before travelling to Swale Skills Centre in Sittingbourne to hear how DONG and London Array had supported the centre and its apprenticeship programme.

Tommy said: “We have never experienced such a productive business development trip. We now have an in-depth understanding of what Locate in Kent is trying to nurture and grow and how we may assist them in the future – both on trade and inward investment.”

Locate in Kent signed a Memorandum of Understanding with UKTI last year. The deal hopes to secure maximum levels of overseas investment for Kent.
