Locate in Kent and Kent Science Park goes Dutch

Locate in Kent, the county’s investment promotion agency, and Kent Science Park, near Sittingbourne, are flying the flag for the county at a global event for leading biotechnology and drug discovery companies.

With the aim of raising the profile of Kent as a business location for high-tech biotechnology companies, the Kent partners have attended BIO-Europe, the industry partnering exhibition held in Amsterdam.

Paul Wookey, Locate in Kent’s Chief Executive, said: “We have many biotech businesses in Kent, including a number at Kent Science Park, who are actively working with other biotechnology companies in Europe. Our aim is to promote more partnerships, attract new companies to invest in the county and stimulate the creation of more local jobs.

“While it is great that Pfizer is retaining a presence at Discovery Park it is clear that there are many who work on the Sandwich site who will still want to continue using their skills in the county. Our challenge is to persuade other pharmaceutical and life-science companies to relocate to Kent by promoting the level of world-class skills already to be found here.”

Richard Wheeler, Business Development Director at Kent Science Park, added: “The Netherlands has a cluster of 900 or so international biotechnology companies and the industry is increasingly focusing on how to work together and share the risk and the reward, rather than compete against each other.

“The cost of drug discovery is enormous and for many companies the only way to success is by partnering with other contract research organisations and the major drug companies.”

While at BIO-Europe, Locate in Kent will be promoting the county’s cluster of science and research companies, as well as the facilities at Kent Science Park, which is home to 60 knowledge-based businesses, and Discovery Park, near Sandwich.

Last year’s BIO-Europe, held in Milan, Italy, attracted 1,800 attendees who posted 2,163 licensing opportunities and scheduled 9,202 one-to-one meetings.

Leading pharmaceutical companies supporting BIO-Europe 2012 include Abbott, Almirall, Amgen, AstraZeneca, Baxter, Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Eli Lilly, Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson, Merck Serono, MSD, Novartis Pharma, Nycomed (a Takeda Company), Pfizer, Roche, Sanofi and Shire.
