Get Tax Returns in Order Now, Warns DSH

DSH Chartered Accountants & Business Advisors is urging taxpayers who have failed to submit tax returns to take advantage of a new HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) campaign.

HMRC’s latest tax clampdown, launched on Tuesday (July 9), is aimed at people who have received a self assessment tax return or notice to complete a tax return for any year up to 2011/12 but have not taken action.

Stephen MetcalfStephen Metcalf, Tax Manager at DSH, said: “HMRC have access to more information about taxpayers than ever before. This campaign gives people the opportunity to get their tax affairs in order and up to date voluntarily. While some penalties will still apply, it is likely to cost people significantly more if HMRC has to pursue them individually.”

Marian Wilson, HMRC’s head of campaigns, said: “We know this approach works because campaigns launched so far have produced more than £547 million by people coming forward voluntarily. And evidence shows that people who change their behaviour voluntarily are more likely to remain compliant longer.

“We will continue to analyse information using Connect, our state-of-the-art intelligence-gathering software, and will be looking more closely at people who have gaps in their tax records.”

Once taxpayers have informed HMRC that they want to take part in this campaign, they have until October 15 to complete and submit a tax return, and pay the tax and National Insurance Contributions that they owe.

After this date, if they have not submitted their returns and paid the tax due, penalties of up to 100 per cent of the tax, or criminal prosecution, could follow.

Stephen at DSH added: “We would urge anyone who has yet to take action on their self assessment to contact us to check their tax position is in order. We are happy to submit tax returns on behalf of taxpayers, giving them peace of mind that HMRC will not come after them. By acting early they will avoid any escalation in penalties and fines.”
