A ground-breaking Dartford company is celebrating double success in the shape of a six-figure cash injection into its Research & Development programme, and an award for its progress so far.

8point3, which designs and manufactures LED lighting for industrial and commercial premises and is based at Suscon, has been awarded £200,000 from the Government’s TIGER Regional Growth Fund, which is open to businesses in the Thames Gateway.

The money is to be invested in developing new products in the fast growing industry, including employing extra staff.

Double success for switched on 8point3“Since we began trading, we have been at the forefront of developing LED lighting systems,” said Ashley Bateup, Managing Director of 8point3.

“We’d seen a gap in the market for a company that designed and manufactured bespoke LED systems here in the UK. At that time, most LED lighting companies were importing cheap replacement fittings from China.

“Since then we have been continually developing new products, using the latest leading edge technology, and the TIGER funding will help ensure that we continue to do that, grow our capabilities and develop staff.”

The company has also recently been named as Most Promising New Business of the Year in the Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce Business Awards 2014, and is a finalist in the Science and/or Technology Business of the Year category at the 2014 KEiBA awards.

“This recognition is a reflection of the hard work put in by the whole team since the company was launched,” said Ashley.

“I’m told that there was a record number of entries in the Invicta Chamber of Commerce awards category this year, so to win is a huge achievement for 8point3 and its staff”
