B2B 2013 comes to Canterbury

EK1B2B 2013, a very popular and successful conference and exhibition format is coming to Canterbury. The free to attend business event will be held at Augustine House, Canterbury, on Tuesday, 10th September 2013. Organised by Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce, the day is designed to nurture business development and sustained growth for exhibitors and visitors alike.

As well as more than 80 of the county’s leading companies, displaying the latest products and services on offer, visitors can listen to inspirational business speakers, attend high quality workshops providing the very latest business information and extend the reach of their companies with organised ‘speed networking’ sessions running throughout the day.
The two inspirational keynote speakers are Derek Arden, and he will present ‘Negotiate To Achieve the Impossible’, and Channel 4’s Secret Millionaire, Caroline Marsh, one of Britain’s leading female property investors and an inspiration to thousands.

Knowing how to negotiate effectively is a crucial skill for everyone in life, as Derek Arden points out: “There are two kinds of people in the world: those who negotiate, and those who don’t. So there are also two prices in the world: the price for those who negotiate, and the price for those who don’t. Every day, businesses spend far too much money on everything from stationary, to premises, to accountancy fees.

“At this very moment profits are at their lowest, and costs are very high. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. A good rule of thumb is to begin by assuming that everything is negotiable – and to have planned in advanced what you want to achieve. With a Pound of preparation, an Ounce of bravery and a pinch of competitiveness, everyone can get a better deal.

“Remember, your first negotiation is always with yourself. Make sure you believe that everything and anything is negotiable – even the impossible – because it is.”

No stranger to negotiating, Caroline Marsh was catapulted into the media limelight in 2008, when she was featured on prime-time Channel 4 television as a philanthropic ‘Secret Millionaire’.

Throughout her life, she has consistently demonstrated resilience, determination, integrity, passion, leadership, creativity and generosity, and it is these skills and values she loves sharing with others. Visitors can hear about her journey towards financial freedom.

Workshops include ‘Exporting for growth’ presented by UK Trade and Investment; ‘Fun with pensions’ from Chartered financial planners Facts & Figures; ‘Collaborating for sustainability’ presented by green renovation cluster, Greenov, and finally an interactive workshop from the Design Council, with tips and techniques on business growth.

Networking is an essential business skill that many people find difficult, and making small talk with strangers isn’t always easy. However, if you follow a few simple rules, networking can be a powerful tool to have at your disposal. Most of the time our fear of networking comes from the unknown; what will the person you are talking to do, or say? The solution is very simple, network at a place where everyone is there for the same reason as you.

“What you have to accept is that everyone at a networking event will be as nervous as you are. They also want to make new contacts, learn new things and find new people to do business with. Speed Networking sessions at the B2B allow both networking novices and old hands to practice the art of networking in a safe, controlled environment,” concludes Jo James, Chief Executive of Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce.
